THE CLOUD

THE CLOUD

The cloud is basically the internet; all the networks that happen on the internet. One is able to use the cloud on Gmail, Yahoo!Mail, Mozy, Dropbox, Evernote, and many other sites online. It is also possible to save all one’s digital media on the cloud rather than taking up all the space on one’s computer.  On the cloud people are able to check their mail, work on and share documents, collaborate documents on Google Docs, and also make notes on Evernote. The cloud seems like a great way to perform many tasks and saves files, and it is, but one arising concern is how safe the cloud is.
One main safety concern that users should be aware of when saving data on the cloud, is hacking. It is quite easy for the ‘bad guys’ to get easy control of one’s password, so users must always be conscience and aware of this. They can be more aware when ‘technical services’ call them, and ask for their password;  someone can know this is a false technical service assistant, because the social engineers usually don’t ask for passwords. The U.S. Patriot Act is allowed to access information from one’s cloud, and they may use the data in necessary cases. They are also mainly allowed access to the data to prevent danger (promoting safety).
Although the chances for the cloud crashing are minimal, there is still the chance that it could happen. If the cloud were to crash then it would be because of a big natural disaster like an earthquake or flooding. One should always consult their service provider and ask them what their plan is if such an event was to happen. Some answers they would give you would include having a backup generator or server that would keep all the data stored. But at the end of the day it is your files, so as Craig Balding, the founder of the blog entitled ‘Cloudsecutrity.org,’ says, “You have to have a plan B.” This plan can be either having a local back up of your files, for instance one’s photos, on a USB or some other device. Another plan would be to save your photos on another cloud device, but the problem with this is your are spending a lot of money, and you never know if the cloud is going to crash or how safe your files are, out there.
As one is able to see there are a lot of safety concerns about the cloud and whether they should or shouldn’t save their data there. Despite all this, the cloud servers, and security programs are working on improving the cloud and its safety regulations and systems.
